   b. 1915, Bingley
   Astronomer
   Fred Hoyle held a number of academic posts at Cambridge and was professor of astronomy at the Royal Institution from 1969–72. His work on steady-state theory (the continuous creation of matter) was superseded by the discovery of background radiation, but his work on stars confirmed that hydrogen is there converted to helium. He is known by the general public for books aimed at popularizing science, including Highlights in Astronomy (1975), and for the fact that he also wrote science-fiction, notably The Black Cloud (1957). His autobiography, The Small World of Fred Hoyle appeared in 1986. Among his controversial hypotheses were the suggestions that life originated in interstellar dust and that flu epidemics are linked to sunspot outbreaks.
